The novel begins as she takes the train from Princeton, New Jersey, the posh university town where she has a fellowship as a writer, to Trenton, New Jersey, a nearby city that is much poorer, to get braids done before returning to Nigeria. Ifemelu is a young woman from Nigeria living in the United States. ![]() ![]() ![]() The detective untangles a web of robberies, lies and murder. ![]() ![]() That aside, though, this remains a beautifully relatable and tender account of a young woman trying her best to swallow Silicon Valley’s Kool-Aid, but never quite managing to keep it down. If there was one part of this memoir I didn’t enjoy, it was her interminable lists of observations and objects so numerous you start to wonder whether they’re only there to beef up the word count. We know exactly what she had for lunch, what the stores on every street were selling, what colleagues in her office were wearing, their hobbies and foibles. ![]() She must have been taking notes the whole time. ![]() From this vantage, not quite at the heart of the action but adjacent to it, she carefully, wryly observes everyday life in the Valley. ![]() ![]() She believes men can find the way to spiritual unity by getting back in touch with the emotionally open part of themselves-and lay claim to the rich and rewarding inner lives that have historically been the exclusive province of women. With trademark candor and fierce intelligence, hooks addresses the most common concerns of men, such as fear of intimacy and loss of their patriarchal place in society, in new and challenging ways. But toxic masculinity punishes those fundamental emotions, and it’s so deeply ingrained in our society that it’s hard for men to not comply-but hooks wants to help change that. In The Will to Change, bell hooks gets to the heart of the matter and shows men how to express the emotions that are a fundamental part of who they are-whatever their age, marital status, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. ![]() But to know love, men must be able to look at the ways that patriarchal culture keeps them from knowing themselves, from being in touch with their feelings, from loving. ![]() ![]() From the New York Times bestselling author of All About Love, a brave and astonishing work that challenges patriarchal culture and encourages men to reclaim the best part of themselves.Įveryone needs to love and be loved-even men. Mission Economy offers a path to rejuvenate the state and thereby mend capitalism, rather than end it. But contrasting international experiences reveal otherwise: the correct response to the pandemic is to demand better government, not less. ![]() ![]() Free marketers argue that these problems are inherent to the state. But therein lies what might seem to be a paradox: just as we have needed a strong, capable government, those in power have been exposed as clueless and incompetent. It has also demonstrated the power and importance of the state in a crisis. The bungled response of the government to the pandemic – from the failure to enforce lockdown early enough to the test and trace debacle – has exposed the depth of the rot. These failures were enabled by the retreat of the state from guiding and directing the economy from the Thatcher era to today. Business is bedevilled by low investment, short-term management and corporate greed. Yet Barker’s story “The Forbidden” ups the ante by taking a more philosophical approach to the subject of urban legends in addition to simultaneously introducing one of horror’s most iconic killers: the Candyman. Lovecraft, MR James, Machen, even Ramsey Campbell, have all regaled their readers with tales of terror in which an everyman encounters the paranormal via poking about in secrets best left unknown. The genre is littered with innumerable examples of a formula that is now as familiar to fans as the cycle of the seasons: some skeptical Goofus hears about something spooky, starts investigating said spooky legend/place/monster, and finds out that the legend is based on some terrifying reality. This ubiquitous habit of us humans, to pass on the horrific and bizarre, is therefore understandably ample fodder for horror fiction. ![]() We’ve all heard unspeakable rumors whispered in the back of the schoolyard, creepy legends spoken in hushed voices at sleepovers, or he-said-she-said ghoulishness handed down by older siblings. When it comes to the horror genre, there is no shortage of work dealing with urban legends and the potential reality behind the campfire stories we use to terrify children.
